Tailwind Labs sells Tailwind UI to users of its free Tailwind CSS framework

Adam Wathan went full-time on the free Tailwind CSS framework, planning to sell products around it. Tailwind UI, a paid product built on the framework, launched in early access in February 2020. It made $400,000 on day one and was about to pass $2 million about five months after release. Wathan says the framework docs work as a distribution channel for Tailwind UI.

What they ran

Adam Wathan went full-time on Tailwind CSS, a free framework first released on Halloween night 2017, funded by Refactoring UI earnings. In his post on how the business began, he says he expected to build commercial offerings around it. He and Steve Schoger spent months on Tailwind UI, a paid product built on the framework, and shipped early access in February 2020.

What happened

Tailwind UI made $400,000 on its first day, per Wathan's 2020 year in review. About five months after release, it was close to $2 million in revenue. The company had done over $4 million in revenue in under two years. Wathan calls the Tailwind CSS docs a distribution channel for Tailwind UI. The free framework passed 10 million total installs.

What the account does not show

Every figure is self-reported on the founder's own site, and the first post is undated. The source gives no conversion rate from free users to buyers. The $4 million total is not split by product. Wathan began with a bankroll from an earlier product, which many maintainers lack. One framework with 10 million installs says little about smaller projects.
