Our take Opinion
The Chief Strategy Officer at Faire sets out why shopping agents may threaten some intermediaries far more than the big retail marketplaces, by splitting a marketplace's work into search, transaction, trust and fulfillment. Our reading is that the sorting question is useful beyond Amazon: if a business's value is mostly search and checkout, an agent can replace it, while one that funds returns, shipping and supplier vetting keeps something agents cannot easily copy. Founders and first marketing hires can use this to judge whether their own channel dependence is fragile, and to weigh a marketplace's walled garden against going direct. The piece states its case through reasoning and rough market share comparisons rather than testing, so it is a framework, and we would treat it with caution where goods are low-touch, such as travel, or where agents become common faster than the piece assumes.
